It would be nice to say clans are groups of like-minded people, banded together to accomplish some common goal, but the truth is far more bureaucratic and self-serving. Clans in this age serve as your ticket to adventure, wealth, and Fame. Clan Masters are able to apply for Permits, licenses for the clan to send teams into stategic locations, be it to cull the population of a certain kind of monster, or simply bring back more wealth from ruins of ages past. Individuals are rarely offered permits, and Gladium are almost always at the discretion of the guild on what benefits they reap for “tagging along”.
History of Clans
People have always sought others to assist them in travels, missions, and exploration, but it was not until the Council of Nyrund 250 years ago that clans became an integral part of buisiness, goverment, and social stratification. At the council, an official map of all official ruins, dragon’s dens, and potential threats to peace was created, voted on, and put into bureaucratic law. Citizens could pay fees to explore, eradicate, or pillage these areas under contract of some third party, and in return the third party would reimburse the fee, or agree to some condition of employment. The fees for most exploration were set so high that no one individual could afford to pay forward that kind of money, even under a contract that would return the fee, thus organizations, clans, were founded that pooled rewards and resources together to both pay the fees, and build names for themselves, opening up better contracts, rates on fees, and more prestigious and rewarding agreements. This led to an economic system where city states collected taxes and fees on what amounted to citizens making their cities safer, and created an industry that divided her people into classes easily managed by the state.
